(Title – 運命の遭遇 – Unmei no Sōgū – Fateful Encounter)
A week has passed by already. I am starting to get used to the university life. Fortunately, I am in the same block section as Ki-kun. Being with him made it easier for me to adjust. It’s just strange though that I did not see him during our first day of classes. Maybe I was just too focused with my own world.
Until now, I only talk with Ki-Kun or with our professors. I rarely speak with other classmates. It’s either I respond with “hm” or just nod in response. The wall that I built around me was so high and mighty, that nobody can wreck it to get to know the real me. I secluded myself from the world because I was afraid that they will hurt me again.
In our university, it is a must for kouhais to get to know and pay respects to their senpais. We have a long break until our next subject. During that time, our professors arranged for us to meet our senpais. All available freshmen assembled in the hall. The senpais were all in front.
(Kouhai 後輩 literally means “later colleague.” It used to address a person that is younger than you or a lower-class student.)
One of the professors started the program by welcoming us to the university and the dean gave her “inspirational” (for me it was boring) speech. The dean made a hand gesture for the MC indicating that the senpais should now start introducing themselves.
I started to notice that the girls in front of us were “kya-ing” like some fan girls. I was laughing deep inside me. I know for sure that they are looking for some good-looking seniors. I can imagine myself when I am reading manga or watching anime because I have the tendency to do the same! Mine’s a silent one though. I don’t want my mom to think that I am gay.
I was getting bored already. I yawned but I made sure to cover my mouth. I don’t want them to think that I am not enjoying this “happy and warm” event.
Almost all senpais were able to introduce themselves. The professors looked uneasy while exchanging glances with each other. I’m thinking that there might be some upperclassmen who did not attend the event. Boy, they are in trouble.
Out of nowhere, five guys came in to the hall wearing jerseys, shorts, and athletic shoes. It’s obvious that they are basketball athletes. Everyone looked at them and the girls started to scream. At first, I found it cute; but now, my ears are about to close due to the noise that they are making. They are so annoying. What’s so cool about these guys anyway?
Their arrival was just right. The last senpai on stage was done introducing himself. I pity him though because while he was introducing himself, everyone was eyeing the jocks.
I sighed and out of dismay. I excused myself to go to the washroom. While I was walking along the aisle, I did not realize that I was about to run into the jocks. They did not pass by the center aisle since there is a herd of delusional girls. Unexpectedly, they went to the aisle where I was passing by.
I tried to avoid them but the girls right next to me pushed me aside to get to their beloved jocks. I accidentally fell on someone sitting near the aisle. I apologized and fortunately, they did not get angry. I was having cold sweats out of embarrassment. My cheeks and ears were red. I have the tendency to blush easily. While I was trying to stand up from where I landed, a big hand reached out to me. I grasped this persons hand tight for me to pull myself up.
I can feel that the people near us were looking daggers at me.
The man with the big hand who helped me was one of the jocks. I was petrified. I didn’t notice that at first. I was too preoccupied with my humiliation.
“Are you okay bench boy?” the jock with the buzz cut asked me with a poker face.
“I’m fine. Tha-,” I stuttered because I just realized that he was the same jock who I encountered in the park before. I’m in shock. I didn’t know that I would meet him again nor expect that we would be in the same school. I knew it was him even though I only saw him from his side.
I suddenly heard a flick and because of that, I woke up from my temporary daze. The guy flicked his fingers in front of me because I was not paying any attention. He frowned and then asked, “Are you deaf or blind? Which is it?”
“I -,” I stuttered again.
“What? You’re sorry again?” he asked with a flat tone.
One of the other jocks interrupted and said, “Hey Ryū. Don’t give the kid a hard time.” He sounded concerned.
“Shut it Ken. I was not talking to you,” the guy with the buzz cut harshly said.
“Hey kid. I’m sorry for this short-tempered guy. He’s really nice if you get to know him more,” Ken said while looking at Ryū as if teasing him.
“This is pointless. Let’s just go. Everyone’s waiting for us,” Ryū said then dashed off towards the stage. I saw the other jocks were chuckling then they followed after him.
Someone patted my back and when I looked back, I saw that it was Ki-kun.
“Hey Aniki! Do you know him Kichirō-san?” he said as if amazed.
( Aniki, 兄貴 – is a Japanese honorable term for an older brother or a superior.)
“He was the guy I told you about when I was at the park,” I answered him directly.
“That guy’s famous here. I heard that he is the team captain of our basketball team. He is also quite well-off. He is one of the outstanding students here and is currently in his third year. He’s basically one of the main reasons why the girls go rabid like mad dogs,” he said then laughed coldly.
“Ohoh. You know a lot about him eh Ki-kun?” I said while teasing him.
“Nah. He’s too popular for me,” Ki-kun said.
“What? Are you gay?!?” I asked. I was dumbfounded because of this revelation from him.
“You can’t tell? You are one too, right?” he responded while laughing. “I know you are into guys. I can tell from how you look at Ryū-senpai. Heh,” he added and smirked.
“No I’m not! Don’t assume something if you haven’t asked yet,” I said while pouting. Deep inside me, I can tell that something was brewing. I had mixed emotions based on what Ki-kun said. What even made my confusion worse is when my heart was going doki doki when he I touched Ryū’s hand.
( doki doki, ドキドキ – is a word that mimics the sound of a beating heart. It is used to describe physical/emotional excitement or racing of the heart. )
Waah~~~?!? No! I am not gay! I am not gay? Or am I?
I then asked dear Buddha, “Is this a fateful encounter?”
