(Title – 吉 – Kichi – Lucky)
First day of school ended. Even though I only have 3 subjects for the day, I feel so exhausted. Staying at home for a while might have made my body grow weaker.
Even though I was feeling tired, since this is something fresh to me, I had a surge of diligence. I felt excited to the point that I am getting the same feeling as with getting an update for an anime series that I am watching. I decided to go to the library to read in advance. I know I can earn more good points and would be able to get the attention of my professors. Call me a show off, if you please. I may be shy but deep down inside me, I’m the type of guy who wants to stand out and prove myself worthy of their praise.
The library was situated on the western side of the campus. I am on the eastern part. You can imagine how that can make me even lazier.
It was a 10-minute walk to the library. On my way, I admire the beautiful sky due to the palette of blue, red, orange and yellow, as dusk fast approaches. The scenery was awe-inspiring as the setting sun changes the color of the cherry, plum, and peach blossoms, giving them a darker shade of pink, white and yellow. It was like an on-the-spot hanami for me.
(hanami – 花見, literally “flower viewing. The enjoyment of the beauty of flowers is an old Japanese custom. They like best to view cherry blossoms (桜 sakura). The custom of Hanami is more than a thousand years old. It is still very popular in Japan.)
I was near the library when I heard a commotion. I heard a crowd of girls screaming like crazy fans. I continued to walk and yes, I was right – There was a crazy crowd, as if they saw Takeru Satō.* I chuckled to myself and shook my head out of disbelief.
Out of curiosity, I squeezed myself through the crowd. I was shocked because I could not even get through them. Whatever they were checking on, I guess it’s really something that they have set their sights on. I can’t even see anything while on my tiptoes because of my height. Oh mom! Why do I have to get your genes? I decided to walk away and move on to my original goal – to go to the library.
I walked right through the library main entrance. It was huge as compared to our library back in senior high. While I was walking along the hallway, I bumped into someone. Because I was short and frail, I fell down easily and dropped my textbooks. The guy who bumped into me was still standing.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Are you okay?” said the guy who was taller than me by a few centimeters. He was very gentle even though he appears to be in a hurry. I can tell that he was really sorry about what happened.
I nodded and said I’m okay. He raised me up and helped me pick up my textbooks.
I looked at him and I started to notice that this guy is really good looking. His skin was pale and as white as the moon on a clear night sky. He had short, clean-cut black hair. He looks like a mixture of Korean and Japanese race. His nose and lips were just right. I finally started to notice that he’s younger than me.
“I think I can manage, senpai. Looks like you’re in a hurry,” I said to break the awkward silence. I called him senpai out of respect even though I know he was younger.
He chuckled and blushed a little.
“No. It’s fine. Don’t be too formal with me. I think we’re of the same age,” he said.
“Thanks!” I smiled at him and he smiled back. I guess I do have skills in making new friends after all. What made me happy as well is that he flattered me. I’m so full of myself. I wanted to laugh but I would look silly.
“Do you happen to know where is the section for Nursing Practice?” I asked. “I kinda suck when it comes to direction.” I then grinned.
“Are you taking nursing classes too? I’m a freshman! You may be my senpai,” he enthusiastically said.
“Hey I am a freshman too, kiddo. I stopped school for a year, so by age, I am your senpai,” I happily responded.
“All right, Mister-senpai-by-age, what’s your name? My name is Naoki Sakaguchi. You can call me Ki-kun if you like.” He grinned with his hazel brown eyes sparkling.
“My name is Kichirō. Kichirō Ishikawa,” I responded with an awkward smile.
“How would you like me to call you then?” He asked.
“Call me as you prefer.” I flatly said.
“I’m in luck then because I met someone with this name! I will call you Kichirō-san.”
(Kichirō, 吉郎 – means “lucky son”)
“Nah. I’m the lucky one as I made a friend who is honest and sturdy like a tree” I laughed heartily recalling that he was still able to stand properly when we bumped into each other.
(Naoki, 直樹 – means “straight/erect/honest tree.”)
We both laughed at the same time.
“Kichirō-san, I will accompany you to your destination then.”
I nodded in response and we walked together towards to my destination. Then I remembered something. “Hey Ki-kun, I thought you were in a rush earlier?” I asked him this because I don’t want to be a bother to him.
“It’s fine. I think the crowd’s gone anyway. I can check on the basketball team some day,” he honestly said and flashed a smile on me.
And that’s how I luckily met my best friend…
